Francis Henry Egerton Bridgewater, jarl af (1758-1829), stillede ved sit testamente 8000 £ til disposition for The Royal Society, således at de skulle gives til en eller flere forfattere, der skulle vælges af præsidenten for dette selskab til at skrive om "Guds Magt, Visdom og Godhed, som de åbenbares i det skabte". Summen blev derefter ligelig delt imellem 8 forfattere, hvoraf hver skulle behandle een side af emnet, og de 8 såkaldte B. Treatises ("B.-Bøgerne") fremkom.
